Distress – The First Mental and Emotional Cause of Cancer

January 30, 2012 · Posted in Health Information, Health Resources · Comment

stress

(NaturalNews) How can you live a stress-free life and prevent cancer and other health problems? By learning to manage your cortisol stress hormone levels and by putting the mental/emotional stress in your life in the proper perspective. Once you know how to balance the physical factors of sleep, diet and exercise along with the mental and emotional stresses in your life then you will restore health in your body and mind. This is critical in any alternative cancer treatment.

It is a fact that high stress is a major contributing factor to cancer and many other diseases. The question is how does stress cause cancer? To answer this, one must look at what the stress response does physiologically in the body. Hans Selye, the father of stress research, said there are two types of stress, distress and eustress. Distress is a longer, more damaging response which negatively affects the organs, glands and systems including the immune system. Eustress is a short term beneficial stimulus to the system. If you run up and down the stairs ten times you feel invigorated. Now if you run up and down the stairs one thousand times you are exhausted and totally drained, so eustress is health boosting whereas distress is health depleting.

The stress response is controlled by the brain via the hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis or HPA axis. The hypothalamus, which has been called the brain of the brain, is the part of your brain that senses biochemical changes similar to the thermostat in your house. If certain bio-chemicals go high or low, it triggers the brain to respond. The hypothalamus does so by telling the master hormone gland, the pituitary, to send messages to the adrenal glands to secrete a hormone called cortisol. When cortisol is at the proper level it is anti-inflammatory and promotes health. When cortisol goes too high with acute stress or too low with chronic stress, it causes your immune and digestive systems to shut down, inflammation to increase, blood sugar to rise, hormones to go out of balance and bones to become osteoporotic. When cortisol stays high or low it predisposes you to cancer and many other diseases.

What causes cortisol to go out of balance?

1. Mental/emotional stress (distress)
2. Lack of total sleep and pre-midnight sleep (four hours is ideal)
3. Diet high in sugar, starch or acid forming foods
4. Too little or too much exercise

Cancer can form when cortisol becomes chronically high or low because adrenal exhaustion causes immune system suppression and your immune system is what keeps the individual cancer cells (which everyone has), from growing into colonies called tumors.

The most important stress management plan starts with proper sleep, diet, and exercise along with learning how to change your perception of the situation. When you change your perception you can change your reality and your health. To reduce the mental/emotional distress one must live fully in the moment without spending time thinking about the “if only I would have” past or the “if only I could” future. If you had excruciating pain in your body, what does your mind say? “I am going to die if I do not get out of this pain”. But is this really true? Can you endure the pain for one second? The answer is yes and this is how you will endure any storm in your life, by living one moment at a time instead of living in the past or the future. This type of living keeps your cortisol and immune system in balance and keeps you healthy in mind and body.

An Outlook Towards the Natural Erectile Dysfunction Remedies

January 25, 2012 · Posted in Health Information, Health Resources · Comment

Submitted By: Blain Joseph

Erectile dysfunction is a devastating condition that affects the sex life of a male rendering him impotent. Even the thought of erectile dysfunction in males is horrible and no male can afford to face it. It fills the life of a male with incompetence. This is a situation where his manhood is challenged. It is more common in the elderly age group, above 50 years, but there is no guarantee that it would not affect males of younger age group. The sedentary lifestyle of the individuals makes them susceptible to several diseases, including erectile dysfunction compromising the circulatory system.

In order to fight against the strongest erectile dysfunction, the impotent male has to be aware of all the available erectile dysfunction remedies. A man’s cleverness lies in fighting with the erectile dysfunction wisely. He should try the conservative treatment options initially rather than jumping directly into surgical interventions.

There are enormous natural erectile dysfunction remedies available for the impotent males. This gains popularity with regards to the fact that they are free from the potential side effects of drugs, which are common in allopathic oral drugs. Many a times, these drugs may be contraindicated for a particular group of patients imposing danger to their lives. Furthermore, to cooperate with this limitation criterion, natural erectile dysfunction remedies come forward to spread awareness on their numerous benefits.

Coming to the list of natural remedies, the one that is most popular among impotent males is L- Arginine, an amino acid utilized by the body for making nitric oxide. The main action of this substance is to relax the smooth muscles around the penile region thereby allowing increased blood flow to get a powerful erection. The most curious question that may arise in the mind of an impotent male will be on how to obtain the merits of this substance.

It is not that tough for non-veggies. L-arginine is naturally available in poultry, fish, meat and dairy products. For those, who do not find consuming non vegetarian foods, there is a better option available in the form of oral supplements. It is sometimes addressed as natural Viagra by certain pharmaceutical manufacturers. However, men on L-arginine may sometimes complain of indigestion and is contraindicated in impotent males with stomach ulcers.

People taking antidepressants may sometimes experience erectile dysfunction as a possible side effect. For such individuals, “Gingko “can prove to be of great help. Their mechanism of action is similar to that of L-arginine allowing the smooth muscles around the penis to relax thereby increasing blood flow to the penis for maintaining a sustained erection.

The significant zinc depletion from the body as a result of diabetes, liver diseases, kidney disorders, long term use of diuretics etc. may progress rapidly to erectile dysfunction. Hence, zinc supplement intake still remains as one of the natural erectile dysfunction remedies available until today.

The Winthania somnifera avails the impotent male stamina, energy and better sexual functions. Moreover, the person may experience drowsiness as a common aftereffect of the drug. Furthermore, it may interact very badly with sedatives and hence caution should be taken not to use them together.

Another natural remedy not recommended is the “Yohimbe” derived from the yohimbe tree bark of western Africa. Just like the others, this also increases the libido, enhances blood supply to the penile region and also decreases the time between successive ejaculations. This possesses serious harmful effects, including anxiety, dizziness, a sudden drastic drop in blood pressure, fatigue, abdominal pain etc. This can even make a person paralyzed and enable the person to experience hallucinations. Thus, an impotent male should be careful while choosing any of the erectile dysfunction remedies as some may impose a serious threat to life.

4 Creepy Ways Big Pharma Peddles its Drugs – AlterNet

January 12, 2012 · Posted in Health Information · Comments Off

AlterNet / By Martha Rosenberg

Big Pharma uses ads that sow hypochondria, raise health fears and sell diseases to adults and their children.

It’s no secret that advertising works. Big Pharma wouldn’t spend over $4 billion a year on direct-to-consumer advertising if it didn’t mean massive profits.

What is more unknown is why drug ads that sow hypochondria, raise health fears and “sell” diseases are often the most common–and effective–even when the drugs themselves are of questionable safety.

The nation’s fourth most frequent drug ads in 2009 for were Cymbalta, making Eli Lilly $3.1 billion in one year, despite the antidepressant’s links to liver problems and suicide. Pfizer spent $157 million advertising Lyrica for fibromyalgia in 2009, despite the seizure pill’s links to life-threatening allergic reactions. The same year, it spent $107 million advertising the antidepressant Pristiq, even though it also had links to liver problems.

So, how does Pharma dupe us into using unsafe drugs? Today’s drug ads, targeted directly to consumers since 1999, seem like they sell diseases and often cast women, children, the elderly and mentally ill in a bad light. But a quick look at ads before direct-to-consumer advertising (DTC) in medical journals shows that drug ads have always done so. It’s just that patients didn’t used to see them.

Here are some of Pharma’s most offensive ad campaigns, then and now.

1. You’re Sicker Than You Think

When psychiatric drugs first became popular for use in the general population, in the late 1960s, everyday personality problems became imbued with psychiatric labels. “Lady, your anxiety is showing (over a coexisting depression),” says a 1970 ad, showing an older, wrinkly woman in a bouffant wig with gigantic sunglasses and garish jewelry. “On the visible level, this middle-aged patient dresses to look too young, exhibits a tense, continuous smile and may have bitten nails or overplucked eyebrows,” says the ad copy. “What doesn’t show as clearly is the coexisting depression.”

The ad, both sexist and ageist, suggests the woman needs the antidepressant and tranquillizer Triavil.

Another ad from 1968 shows a bored, upper-middle-class couple whose hauteur is also said to really be depression. “Do you have patients who try to hide frustration behind conformity?” says the ad for the antidepressant Aventyl HCl.

You’d think such demeaning ads would vanish with DTC advertising because people would be offended. But You’re Sicker-Than-You-Think ads are alive and well since DTC advertising and even flowering.

A three-page consumer ad in the late 2000s similarly conveys that everyday psychological traits could actually be dire mental problems that require medication. If you are “talking too fast,” “spending out of control,” “sleeping less,” “flying off the handle” and “buying things you don’t need,” you could be suffering from bipolar disorder said the ads, which appeared in magazines like People. And here you thought it was the coffee. Accompanying photos of a woman screaming into a phone and contorting her face are so extreme they could come out of the movie Halloween Part II, if the woman were holding a knife.

Psychiatric drugs are not just advertised for everyday personality problems. Pharma is pushing them for everyday pain conditions. Eli Lilly’s original depression campaign for the antidepressant Cymbalta, “Depression Hurts,” seems to anticipate its subsequent approval for pain conditions including back problems. Now ads tout Cymbalta as a “non-narcotic, once daily analgesic FDA approved for three indications across four different chronic pain conditions,” as if it does not have severe controversial psychiatric risks including the suicide of volunteers who tested it.

And seizure and epilepsy drugs, known for major allergic and psychiatric reactions, are also becoming pain franchises. “What’s causing your chronic widespread muscle pain?” asks an ad for the seizure and epilepsy drug Lyrica. “The answer may be overactive nerves,” says the ad, even though “widespread muscle pain” and “over-active nerves,” are not mentioned in the approved labeling for Lyrica, says pharmaceutical reporter John Mack. The military spent $35 million on seizure and epilepsy drugs in 2009 alone, including for migraines, headaches and pain.

And speaking of overkill, ads for genetically engineered injected drugs like Humira, approved to treat serious diseases like Crohn’s disease, psoriatic arthritis and chronic plaque psoriasis look like they are designed to sell beer or beauty treatments, not immune suppressing drugs that invite cancers and lethal infections.

DTC ads don’t just escalate everyday problems into psychiatric problems, they also escalate real psychiatric problems into irresponsible, sensationalistic stereotypes. Ads for the best-selling antipsychotic Risperdal, widely used in children, and in soldiers with PTSD, suggest that people with mental illness have hallucinatory fears about “boiling rain” and “dog women.” The “dog woman” ad, showing a half-dog, half-woman crouched on her elbows, her eyes blackened, furthers the sensationalizing of mental illness with the tagline, “Because relapses are a living nightmare.”

2. Your Kid Is Sick

DTC ads don’t just convince people they’re in need of new drugs, but also that their kids may be, too. And it’s been going on for decades.

Long before Pharma convinced parents, teachers and clinicians that millions of US kids had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), kids were said to suffer from “minimal brain dysfunction” (MBD) and “hyperkinesis,” two conditions that were essentially the same as ADHD. In fact, so many kids had MBD by 1976 that an ad for the drug Cylert hailed the “Importance of single daily dose to the child, the parents and the teacher,” because kids wouldn’t have to be singled out anymore at pill time at school. (ADHD has been so huckstered, a YMCA ad spoofs it with the headline, “Before video games, before Facebook, before Ritalin, there was basketball.”)

Yet neither Cylert–whose approval the FDA withdrew in 2005 because of liver failure and deaths–or the current ADHD drugs are safe. In 2009, researchers reported that kids are more likely to die sudden deaths while taking them and the American Heart Association recommends electrocardiograms (ECGs) before kids take them. And yet, combined sales of ADHD drugs continue to grow from $4.05 billion to $7.42 billion in 2010.

Thirty years ago, it certainly looked like kids were being overmedicated. They were given the antipsychotic Thorazine for their “hyperactivity,” “hostility,” sleep problems and even for vomiting. Picky eaters and kids who wet the bed were given tranquillizers. Kids with tics, stuttering and school phobia were given the tranquillizer Miltown.

But today, ads promoting drugs for kids continue, and now they are aimed at parents. Sometimes, it’s hard to tell the difference between ads for drugs or ads for sugary cereals! Pharma tells moms to give their kids the bubble gum-flavored ADHD med, LiquADD and the grape-flavored ADHD med, Methylin. The latter campaign, to parents, is “Give ‘em the GRAPE!”

DTC advertising has also convinced parents their kids suffer from GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) otherwise known as acid reflux disease, which was barely a disease in adults much less kids, before consumer advertising. “GERD Can Be a Big Problem for Little Kids,” say award-winning ads for Prevacid, which won a “RX Club” Silver award in 2004. In Europe, kids are treated for another “adult disease” and given chewable Liptitor to lower their cholesterol.

Some of Pharma’s most aggressive advertising has been designed to convince parents their children’s minor sniffles or wheezing are imminent asthma and require immediate and expensive drugs. To make the asthma drug Singulair (which also comes in a yummy chewable), the seventh most popular drug in 2010, Merck inked partnerships with the American Academy of Pediatrics and Scholastic, both of which parents consider neutral organizations and not Pharma mouthpieces. Merck also partnered with Olympic gold-medalist swimmer Peter Vanderkaay and NBA kid clubs to sell the asthma drug.

“A kid who’s got what your kid’s got is out doing what your kid’s not,” says one Singulair ad campaign. “Find out how you can help your child breathe a little easier.”

If Singulair were not harmful, the huckstering would simply be a case of wasting money and overmedicating kids. But Singulair has been linked to both pediatric suicide and to emotional, behavioral and ADHD-like symptoms in kids, the latter likely inspiring parents to give their kids “the grape.”

Of course, another kid-targeted campaign is for the vaccine against the sexually transmitted Papillomavirus or HPV, immortalized by Gov. Rick Perry and Rep. Michele Bachmann in hot exchanges this fall. Many object to the sexualizing of 9-year-olds, to government lining Pharma’s pockets by promoting the vaccine (including overseas) and to the risks of the vaccines themselves. But the ads for Gardasil and Cervarix are also offensive.

Last spring, poster-sized ads for Gardasil on Chicago’s commuter trains pretended to sell real estate in sought-after neighborhoods. A closer look revealed descriptions of women in those neighborhoods who thought they didn’t need the HPV vaccine but did, positioning HPV not only as a general risk to the population, like flu, rather than an STD but as “hip.”

HPV vaccine ads got even cooler when GSK rolled out Cervarix extravaganza TV ads and its “armed against cervical cancer” campaign with an Angelina Jolie-like model displaying a skinny arm with a Cervarix tattoo.

3. Be Like Me, and Can Your Beer Do This?

Prescription drugs may affect health, but they are still consumer products sold with the same marketing principles as toothpaste or beer. In fact, the wacky, “Can Your Beer Do This?” Miller Lite campaign of the 1990s, came back to life to sell the antidepressant Wellbutrin XR. In a glossy, color magazine ad, a young man rows his girlfriend on a scenic lake and lists the benefits of his Wellbutrin XR. “Can your medicine do all that?” he asks.

What does it say about the success of DTC advertising that people are assumed to have an antidepressant?

Experiential ads also sell prescription drugs like vintage ads for the “Kodak Moment,” “Maalox Moment” and the old cigarette ads for the “L&M Moment” did. “Lunesta Sleep. Have You Tried it?” asks a 2007 ad in Parade magazine, elevating the experience to something akin to “designer sleep.”

And just as celebrities move other consumer products, they have been deployed to sell prescription drugs. TV personality Joan Lunden and former baseball star Mike Piazza stumped for the allergy pill Claritin, ice skater Dorothy Hamill and track star Bruce Jenner for the pain pill Vioxx, and Sen. Bob Dole for Viagra. NASCAR figure Bobby Labonte also endorsed the antidepressant Wellbutrin XL in 2004. Yes, his medicine could “do all that.”

But there has been a problem with celebrity drug endorsements, unlike product endorsements in which a celebrity like Tiger Woods or Martha Stewart could taint a product, a prescription drug can taint a celebrity! Did Dorothy Hamill know that Vioxx doubled the risk of heart attacks in users when she stumped for it? Did the model Lauren Hutton know that hormone replacement therapy causes a 26 percent higher incidence of breast cancer, a 29 percent increase in heart attacks, a 41 percent increase in strokes, and a doubling of the rate of blood clots when she shilled for it? Does actress Sally Field know that bone drugs like Boniva are linked to esophageal cancer, jaw bone death and the very fractures they are supposed to prevent as she pushes them?

Of course, good product marketing includes public relations. When Pharma sells a disease with no mention of the drug it is really selling, it’s called “unbranded” advertising. Since DTC advertising, Pharma has invaded public service announcements (PSAs) that TV and radio stations confer for free, pretending their take-a-drug messages serve the public good, like messages to change smoke detector batteries or put kids in car seats.

One such “educational” “awareness” campaign called “Depression Is Real” saturated the radio air waves in 2011, funded by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which was investigated by Congress for its Pharma funding from Wyeth, part of Pfizer, and other groups. The high-budget ads, running for free, compare depression to diabetes because it doesn’t go away and to cancer because it can be fatal.

4. One Kind of Ad You Won’t See Anymore

Animal research at drug companies and the National Institutes of Health is a great scientific iceberg of which people only see a tip. In drug development, millions of animals die to prove a drug’s “safety.” At academic and medical centers, animal study grants from NIH provide millions to researchers and labs.

As sentiment grows against animal experiments and the government’s gigantic National Primate Research Centers (new rules will limit the use of chimpanzees), the research is downplayed and even hidden. But there was a time when Pharma actually flaunted animal research.

“More than a decade of animal research on various animal species has suggested that Librium (chlordiazepozxide HCI) exerts its principal effects on certain key areas of the limbic system,” says an ad from the 1970s, showing three monkeys crouching and dangling in cages as assorted experiments are conducted.

An ad for the diet pill Pre-Sate is even worse. It says, “one of the most sophisticated comparative animal studies ever conducted demonstrates direct action on the satiety centers,” and shows five photos of cats in experiments. One shows a life-size white cat looking at the camera with a chain around its neck and invasive instrumentation embedded in its skull.

Today’s consumers, it seems, wouldn’t tolerate ads like these. (Or the experiments behind them.) Why do they tolerate derisive ads about “dog women” and ploys to market pharmaceuticals to kids as if it were candy?

Martha Rosenberg frequently writes about the impact of the pharmaceutical, food and gun industries on public health. Her work has appeared in the Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune and other outlets. Martha Rosenberg’s first book, Born With a Junk Food Deficiency: How Flaks, Quacks, and Hacks Pimp the Public Health, will be published by Prometheus Books in April.

Vaccines are not safe and the amount of shots children are taking keep increasing at a tremendous speed. This means huge profits for the big pharmaceutical companies especially when the schools say that it is mandatory. The truth is, is that vaccines are not mandatory. There is a religious exemption.

Choosing Organic Products Should Be Priority Number 1 for You and Your Family

December 19, 2011 · Posted in Health Information · Comment

By Tamberli L Woolsey

I cannot stress enough how important it is to choose organic products for you and your family. We have entered into an era where research has shown the devastating effects on humans due to modern agriculture. I am passionate about spreading the word and changing the health of our country. Unfortunately we have turned into a society that cares more about the mighty dollar than the welfare of the people. Organic products are becoming more available as the demand becomes more popular.

Genetic engineering, synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and large scale mechanization is the back bone to today’s agriculture. It is important to note that agriculture still employees nearly half of the world’s population today. When you eat an apple, green pepper or any other plant based food, the chemicals that where applied to those fields are grown into that food. There is no way to wash these toxins off. They are in the soil, the root system, the plant, the fruit and then into you. The same goes with products made that surround your skin. Take cotton for example. 8.5 million tons of pesticides are dumped onto cotton fields in the US annually. It is one of the most chemically treated fields and we surround ourselves with it daily. Even after it is washed, woven and chemically bleached, it still remains extremely poisonous.

Most people are allergic to all synthetic chemicals in one form or another. It is extremely important to note that many chemicals are carcinogens. These are cancer causing agents. This is a great resource to all the cancer inflicted on so many people today. The EPA did a study and found that at least 50% of children acquired their cancer risks the first two years of life. That is a huge motivator to protect our children even more. There are so many more effects from these toxins. Pesticides have been proven to cause miscarriages in women, alteration of the male reproductive function, damage to nervous systems and much more. The list is endless.

Organic farming is by far not the easiest and most cost beneficial, however, it promotes health for both humans and the environment. Organic farming forbids the use of chemicals and uses natural defense mechanisms. Crop rotation is used for weeds, insects for natural pest control and other natural fertilizers. The organic community works on integrity and love. It is impossible, at this point, for organic farms to compete with industrial farming operations. However, organic farming is becoming more popular and small communities are developing every day to support this important movement.

Again, I cannot express how important it is for everyone to do the research, make the commitment to change and support organic products. Not only organic food, but organic bedding, organic cosmetics and everything else we use daily needs to be free of harmful chemicals. I encourage you to start one step at a time and make the change. I am committed to helping people understand the importance and health benefits to organic products. From my family to yours, sleep well.

Tamberli Woolsey is the owner of http://www.allorganicnow.com and she knows the importance of keeping friends and families healthy through the use of organic products like organic bedding. For any questions always feel free to contact her.

Correct Aspirin Dose May Be Key Helping Diabetic Patients Avoid A Second Cardiovascular Event

December 12, 2011 · Posted in Diabetes Prevention, Health Information · Comment

By: John Beecher

A recent study suggests a higher daily dose of aspirin may significantly reduce by 23 percent the risk of death from a second heart attack or stroke by patients with Diabetes.

The operative word is may. The life-saving potential may be real, but there’s that word may again.

Unfortunately, no matter what you read in the tabloids the evidence is not strong enough for most people including adults with diabetes to rush out and start taking daily doses of full strength aspirin even if they have had one heart attack or stroke and want to prevent another.

The operative phrase in the above paragraph is full strength aspirin. According to the 2011 Standards of Care from the American Diabetes Association, high risk people with diabetes and any cardiovascular disease (CVD) such as hypertension (high blood pressure) or high cholesterol or triglycerides (hyperlipidemia) and any diabetes patient with previous heart attacks or stroke (who thus are at high risk for second heart attacks or stroke) may want to talk to their physician about doubling the widely recommended daily baby aspirin dose of 82 mg.

The ADAs 2011 Standards of Care put it this way: Consider aspirin therapy (75162 mg/day) as a primary prevention strategy in those with type 1 or type 2 diabetes at increased cardiovascular risk (10-year risk 10%). This includes most men 50 years of age or women 60 years of age who have at least one additional major risk factor (family history of CVD, hypertension, smoking, dyslipidemia, or albuminuria).

This time the operative phrase in the above paragraph is high risk. Aspirin is no longer recommended for those at low risk for CVD. Low risk individuals include women under age 60 and men under age 50 with no major CVD risk factors such as family history or a prior heart attack or stroke or with hypertension and/or hyperlipidemia.

Figures from the University of Alberta’s meta-analysis (an analysis of previously published studies) also showed that diabetes patients who took aspirin (at any dose) were less likely to have second heart attacks than diabetes patients who took no aspirin at all. That reinforces that diabetes patient, especially with a family history of cardiovascular problems or any of the above mentioned risk factors should definitely be on an aspirin regimen, but that finding isn’t new, says Todd Marcy, a professor of pharmacy at the University of Oklahoma.

Older studies already indicate that smaller doses of aspirin reduce the chances of a person with diabetes from having a stroke or heart attack in the first place. That is important information because adults with diabetes are at the same risk of heart attack or stroke as someone who already has had a heart attack or stroke. Another way of putting it is that diabetes patients are two to four times more likely to die of a heart attack than people without diabetes.
The new meta-analysis, conducted by the University of Alberta (UA) in Canada, found that daily aspirin doses of 325 milligrams or more reduced by 23 percent the chances of a person with type 2 diabetes dying from a second heart attack or stroke.

However, diabetes patients who have had heart attacks or stroke shouldn’t rush to increase their aspirin doses just yet because there’s a downside to taking aspirin, especially full-strength 325 mg aspirin.

There was a significant amount of variation amongst the studies, so at this point, the observed associations should be considered hypothesis-generating and not strong evidence to change practice, says one of the UA’s study’s lead researchers, Scot Simpson, PharmD, an associate professor of pharmacology at UA, Edmonton. (A hypothesis (hi pot thesis) is a proposed explanation for a specific set of facts. Every quantitative study (a study that measures) starts out to examine at least one hypothesis to determine if it really explains what the hypothesis says it does). But there is another factor: Is taking that much aspirin on a daily basis safe for people for people with diabetes?

In our meta-analysis of previous research there were only two big studies, the Physicians Health Study and the United Kingdoms Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) Trials that looked at people with diabetes taking fairly large doses of aspirin. Unfortunately, there were fewer than 600 people with diabetes taking aspirin in those trials.

Because of the safety issue, that’s too small of a group on which to make recommendations to patients, However, we have identified a gap in the literature and it is our hope that some organization will fund a large and long enough, at least five year, prospective study upon which we can recommend the best doses of aspirin to prevent second heart attacks or strokes for people with diabetes without significantly increasing the chances of bleeding in the stomach or elsewhere in the body.

Aspirin works by making platelets in the blood less likely to stick to one another, lowering the risk of clots that can cause heart attack and stroke. Researchers have suggested that people with diabetes are more resistant to aspirins effects than non-diabetic people, leading to the hypothesis that higher doses might be better than lower ones. According to current research, however, the dose of aspirin taken by patients is less important than aspirins mere presence in the bloodstream.

Individuals with diabetes and heart disease should take at least some dose of aspirin, says Cara East, a cardiovascular doctor and director of the Soltero Cardiovascular Research Center at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Science has not yet told us that one dose of aspirin is better than the other.
Current standards of care suggest that aspirin may help prevent a first heart attack or stroke in high-risk individuals including men 50 and older, and women 60 and older, who in addition to diabetes also have other heart disease risk factors such those previously mentioned as well as smoking or diabetes itself. The American Diabetes Association recommends that anyone with diabetes who already has increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk or those who already have had a heart attack or stroke take aspirin at doses of 75-162 mg on a daily basis but NOT the large 325 mg aspirin because of the increased risk of bleeding that accompanies aspirin therapy.

See your physician to determine your CVD risk before taking any aspirin on a regular basis.

Diabetes patients also have other ways to lower the risk of heart attack. Patients should aim to lower their blood pressure to 130/80 less than the general populations goal of 140/90 and keep their LDL cholesterol levels to less than 100 milligrams. Hemoglobin A1C tests, which measure the amount of glucose in your blood over time, should also reveal A1C levels of 7 percent or less. These goals can be reached by altering lifestyle habits (such as reducing ones intake of fats and sugars by being aware of the nutritional content of foods you eat), through taking prescribed medications, or both.

Source: Uploaded by LarryCook333 on Jan 31, 2011 to YouTube

http://www.thenaturalguide.com – Holly Riley is the parent of a fully recovered autistic child, her son Quinn. Quinn was diagnosed with Autism around the age of two and yet in a just a few short years, through the use of dietary change, biomedical treatment and traditional autism therapies, Quinn was able to come out of the Autism fog. In this video Holly shares what she did to adopt the gluten free casein free diet, which was central to reversing Quinn’s Autism.

In this video, Holly shares:

• That dietary intervention was one of the most important steps to Quinn’s recovery.
• Once all dairy and gluten was stopped, Quinn became more connected to his surroundings and his health dramatically improved.
• She used biomedical treatment which also helped recover her son.
• All Defeat Autism Now Doctors recommend changing the diet of an Autistic child.
• Behavior improves and health improves when dairy and gluten are removed.
• A great resource is the Talk About Curing Autism website.
• Rice milk replaced Quinn’s cow milk.
• Replace dairy with water or a grain beverage.
• Start with one meal at a time, such as with breakfast first.
• Gluten and casein are proteins.
• Fruit and vegetables are better snacks than processed foods.
• Avoid soy because the protein in gluten and casein is similar to soy protein.
• The best milk substitute is clean water.
• Read all labels on all foods and make sure the products are free of malt, sugar, food starch, gluten or dairy. Buy vegan products.
• Do basic cooking; cooking from scratch with whole foods (not processed foods, like pasta).
• The crock-pot can be very useful for cooking.
• Prepare gluten free cupcakes in advance and freeze them and then they are available for special occasions.
• Shop at health food stores to avoid foods with chemicals in them and to get highly nutritious organic food.

Milk The Deadly Poison

Read Robert Cohen’s book Milk The Deadly Poison Available at Amazon.com or other major bookstores.

About the Author

Robert Cohen performed research in the 1970′s on the hormonal effects on the brain and behavior. Twenty-five years later, this father of three became concerned about the most controversial drug approval in FDA history, the genetically engineered hormone that is now in our milk supply. Along the way, Cohen discovered that milk is implicated in causing breast cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, and chronic childhood illnesses. Cohen’s skills as a researcher, and his passion for the safety of his family, led to his single-minded pursuit to expose the truth about milk.

Based on his exhaustive and comprehensive research over the past six years, Cohen predicted the Mad Cow Disease outbreak. His dogged determination has set the American dairy industry on its ear. To insure that all citizens of the world learn the truth, Cohen founded and is executive director of America’s Dairy Education Board, a group of nationally prominent doctors dedicated to dispelling the myth that milk is nature’s perfect food.

This is a 1998 Hard Copy Special on MILK. What the government doesn’t want you to know about milk. Don’t drink milk, we know it contains fat and cholesterol but did you know it contains the protein CASEIN (which is basically a glue which leads to a lot of mucous build up and other health problems like asthma and congestion), milk also contains.. powerful growth hormones, viruses, a host of deadly chemical and biological bacterial agents, bovine proteins that cause allergies, insecticides, antibiotics, all this can trigger the growth of cancer and contributes to today’s problem of obese children (ever notice why young girls breasts develop faster?).

Cow’s milk is the number one allergic food in this country. It has been well documented as a cause in diarrhea, cramps, bloating, gas, gastrointestinal bleeding, iron-deficiency anemia, skin rashes, atherosclerosis, and acne. It is the primary cause of recurrent ear infections in children. It has also been linked to insulin dependent diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, infertility, and leukemia. Milk and refined sugar make two of the largest contributions to food induced ill health in our country.

Study says pesticides in food chain causes ADHD in children

November 10, 2011 · Posted in Health Information · 65 Comments

Get Your Kids Into The Kitchen!

By Dave Stancliff/For the Times-Standard

Pesticides threaten our health, yet we still use them in America today. In the Vietnam War, herbicides (a subclass of pesticides) and their deadly effects created a dark legacy that still lingers.

Many Americans have heard about Agent Orange and are aware that the Veterans Administration has recognized numerous ill effects it had on people who were exposed to it. Not so well known is that nine of the 12 most dangerous and persistent organic chemicals are pesticides, according to the 2001 Stockholm Convention findings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_Convention) on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

The result of the convention was an international environmental treaty, which went into effect in May 2004. The aim was to eliminate or restrict the production and use of POPs, defined as “chemical substances that persist in the environment, bio-accumulate through the food web, and pose a risk of causing adverse effects to human health and the environment.”

In the early 1960s, we sprayed Agent Orange in Vietnam as a defoliant. It contained dioxin, but the chemical companies assured everyone that dioxin occurred naturally in the environment and was not harmful to humans. They knew better.

In March 1965, Dow official V.K. Rowe convened a meeting of executives of Monsanto, Hooker Chemical, which operated the Love Canal dump, Diamond Alkali, the forerunner of Diamond-Shamrock, and the Hercules Powder Co., which later became Hercules Inc.

According to documents uncovered years later, the purpose of this meeting was “to discuss the toxicological problems caused by the presence of certain highly toxic impurities” in samples of 2,4,5-T. The primary “highly toxic impurity” was 2,3,7,8 TCDD, one of 75 dioxin compounds.

With all the information that has been collected on the subject of pesticides then and now, you’d think we would have quit using them decades ago. Not so. We’re still using pesticides, and — worse yet — our food chain is polluted with them.

According to new research published in the Journal of Pediatrics, levels of pesticides commonly encountered across the country in food as well as around the home significantly increase children’s risk of developing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and could be causing an increase in the number of children living with the condition.

Pediatrician and public health expert Phil Landrigan, M.D., professor and chair of the department of community and preventive medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, said in a recent interview with MSNBC, “For most people, diet is the predominant source. It’s been shown that people who switch to an organic diet knock down the levels of pesticide by-products in their urine by 85 to 90 percent.”

There you have it. The public continues to buy over-the-counter weed sprays for their yards in the mistaken belief they’re not harmful. Big Agri absolutely depends upon pesticides in nearly all the crops they grow. The corporations continue to claim the new pesticides are safe. Deju vu, anyone?

In spite of the history of Agent Orange and all we’ve learned about the lies the chemical corporations have told in the past, pesticides are harming a new generation.

Some of these corporations are the very same that were caught lying about Agent Orange in the 1970s. That’s why military members who served overseas and were exposed to it are getting disability ratings now. Their children face numerous problems traced to their exposure. Birth defects have been documented.

Now the children of civilians face significantly increased risk of developing ADHD because our food chain is contaminated with pesticides.

Parents are told to give organic food to their children in the study’s summary. Easier said than done. Organic food costs considerably more than pesticide-ridden food. Besides, what kind of message does that send? If you can’t afford organic, you have to eat food exposed to chemicals with serious side-effects.

So what can be done? Urge lawmakers to stop pesticide use. I know there are organizations — for example, http://.nospray.org/ — and individuals trying to do that now. You could support them.

As It Stands, unless we make some big changes in the way we grow our food, our eventual harvest will be a grim one for the next generation.

Marion Nestle, Currently Browsing Posts About: Radioactivity

Uh oh, Radioactive iodine in Japanese food

Japanese health authorities have found levels of radioactive iodine and cesium in spinach, milk, and water. They detected levels of iodine-131 up to seven times higher than safety limits in spinach collected from six farms as far as 75 miles from the reactors.

How serious a problem is this? From a strictly scientific viewpoint, probably not much. But note the “probably.” From the standpoint of the public, the problem is very serious indeed.

What’s happening with the Japanese food supply gets us into the classic contradictions of risk communication. Consider this response:

After the announcements, Japanese officials immediately tried to calm an already-jittery public, saying the amounts detected were so small that people would have to consume unimaginable amounts to endanger their health. “Can you imagine eating one kilogram of spinach every day for one year?” said State Secretary of Health Minister Yoko Komiyama. One kilogram is a little over two pounds.

Edano [chief cabinet secretary] said someone drinking the tainted milk for one year would consume as much radiation as in a CT scan; for the spinach, it would be one-fifth of a CT scan….Drinking one liter of water with the iodine at Thursday’s levels is the equivalent of receiving one-eighty-eighth of the radiation from a chest X-ray.

Is the Japanese public likely to be reassured by these statements? They remind me of the British minister who went on TV and fed a hamburger to his small daughter during the mad cow crisis of the early 1990s. It didn’t work.

We are talking about food here. Something that people put in their bodies and those of their children.

Specialists in risk communication would view radioactive spinach as a problem ranking high on anyone’s “dread-and-outrage” scale.

Radioactivity is not visible, is not under personal control, and is technological, unfamiliar, and foreign. This makes something like this really, really scary, as I explain in the introduction my book Safe Food: The Politics of Food Safety.

So the statements of American experts don’t help much either:

“The most troubling thing to me is the fear that’s out of proportion to the risk,” said Dr. Henry Duval Royal, a radiologist at Washington University Medical School.

Yes it is. Understandably so. And Japanese officials will have a hard time dealing with it unless they are thoroughly forthcoming with information, earn the trust of the public, and take the fears seriously.

Update, March 21: The New York Times account on this issue from March 20. The March 21 story describes the spread of the radioactive materials:

Spinach from a farm in Hitachi, about 45 miles from the plant, contained 27 times the amount of iodine that is generally considered safe, while cesium levels were about four times higher than is deemed safe by Japan. Meanwhile, raw milk from a dairy farm in Iitate, about 18 miles from the plant, contained iodine levels that were 17 times higher than those considered safe, and milk had cesium levels that were slightly above amounts considered safe.

Chocolate Reduces Stroke in Women, Study Finds

(NaturalNews) Swedish researchers have contributed the latest glad tidings to a growing number of studies indicating chocolate is beneficial for the cardiovascular system. According to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, scientists found that women, who ate the most chocolate, had a 20 percent reduction in their stroke risk: USA Today reports. In this case, the quantity consumed was approximately two candy bars per week.

Author Susanna Larsson explains that the healthful components of cocoa are compounds called flavonoids, which have antioxidant activity and the ability to impede the harmful oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), known as “bad cholesterol.” Since the oxidation of LDL leads to the formation of plaque that causes cardiovascular disease, the hindrance of this process reduces the risk of stroke. In addition to this advantage, previous studies have shown dark chocolate consumption can lower blood pressure and insulin resistance, as well as help prevent the formation of blood clots.

In spite of the positive findings, Larsson cautions against eating too much chocolate. She advises that it be consumed in moderation, due to its high content of calories, fat and sugar. Larsson also states that dark chocolate is superior to milk chocolate because it has more cocoa and less sugar.

The researchers at Karolinska Institute studied 33,000 women between the ages of 49 and 83 over a 10-year period. Scientists compared data from the participants’ questionnaires about their chocolate consumption with their stroke risk to determine if a correlation existed. Results revealed the more chocolate the women consumed, the less stroke incidence they incurred. The findings were significant because those who ate 2.3 ounces of chocolate per week had a 20 percent reduced stroke incidence compared to those who seldom ate chocolate.

Although the study does not prove chocolate was responsible for the reduced incidence, after controlling for other stroke risk factors, the results persisted: Larsson relayed to CBS News. Additionally, she expects the results to apply to men also. Regardless of the suggested benefit, experts are advising people to keep the results in perspective and not substitute chocolate for vegetables.

ADHD Warning
Nutrition by Natalie

A recent study published in the UK Lancet medical journal found that children given food which contain common food dyes and sodium benzoate (a preservative) caused several children to become measurably more hyperactive and inattentive.

The findings promoted the UK Food Standards Agency to issue an immediate advisory warning to parents to limit these additives in their children’s diets.

For years psychiatrists have been down playing the connection between nutrition and ADHD symptoms. This study clearly illustrates one such connection.

The New Health Insurance–Avoid Diabetes and Heart Disease So Your Medical Retirement Account Grows

October 8, 2011 · Posted in Health Information · Comments Off

It is now estimated the average couple will need over $200,000 in retirement just to cover medical expenses. Health Savings Accounts are now giving people serious incentives to take care of their health so that money will be there when they need it in old age.

Health Savings Accounts are tax-favored accounts where someone with a qualifying high-deductible health plan can deposit money to be used for future medical expenses. The money can be withdrawn any time to pay medical expenses tax-free. Those who stay healthy and don’t withdraw the money benefit from tax-deferred growth, just like with an IRA.

Many experts now believe that 85-90% of all health problems are self-induced, and can be easily avoided if you understand how. By avoiding the most common diseases that affect modern Americans, you can delay having to take money out of your HSA, and take great advantage of the tax-deferred growth. Over a 20 year period, tax-deferred growth and tax-free use of your money to pay medical expenses during retirement could yield a 30% better return than a taxable investment.

Metabolic Syndrome: The Preventable Diseases That Almost Everyone Gets

One out of every five Americans, 45% of those in their 60′s, and two-thirds of overweight people have metabolic syndrome. An astounding 70% of Americans have at least one symptom.

The symptoms of metabolic syndrome include elevated fasting blood sugar, high LDL cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and a waist circumference of 34 inches or more. Three of the top five causes of death – diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease – are all related to metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome could also be thought of as “pre-diabetes”. Of the cancers, prostate and breast cancer are particularly correlated with metabolic syndrome. And metabolic syndrome will soon overtake cigarette smoking as the number one risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Yet the diseases of metabolic syndrome are almost entirely preventable by simply eating a good diet, exercising, and maintaining a normal body weight. Do so, and you avoid paying for the medications that everyone else is taking. Even more importantly, you avoid the surgery, hospitalization, rehab, and all the other expenses that come with a heart attack, stroke, colon cancer, and other related health problems.

If you are withdrawing several hundred dollars a year from your HSA to pay for cholesterol medication and blood pressure medication and other drugs, you’re going to have a difficult time growing the account. But if you stay healthy, and invest most of your money in a good mutual fund, you could easily accumulate over $500,000 in a 25 year period.

HSAs reward personal responsibility. Those who save for the future and maintain healthy lifestyle habits will be rewarded with both health and wealth in their old age.
