Medical Diabetic Supplies: Variables to Bear In Mind When Buying Provisions

March 6, 2012 · Posted in Diabetes Resources · Comment

By: Shawni Groezinger

Diabetes can be a tricky disease. But the fact is, millions and millions of Americans are actually suffering from this disease. Nonetheless, the good news is, there are a lot of companies and sources for medical diabetic supplies. If you yourself are suffering from diabetes, perhaps you very well know how important it is to have a stable stock of diabetic supplies at home. This way, you will be prepared in case any emergency comes up.
You can buy from your local and trusted drug store. If you need the common diabetic supplies, then you will most likely find them in local drug stores. If you want, you can also try the specialty stores. However, the problem with these stores is that there are times that they do not have the more complicated and sophisticated diabetic supplies.

In these cases, you can opt for purchasing and having your diabetic supplies by mail. You can ask your doctor about this. There are actually a lot of companies who deliver their products or diabetic supplies right at your doorstep. You should ask for a prescription from your doctor though because it is necessary. More so, the delivery may also take some time.

And lastly, you can also buy diabetic supplies online. There are actually a lot of websites which are specifically for this purpose. More so, a lot of drug stores and companies are also offering their products online. Just make sure that you go for the secured websites.

You have to bear in mind that the key here is to go for the trusted names and companies when it comes to the particular medical diabetic supplies that you will need. This way, you can be assured that you will get only the high quality products and materials that will not compromise your health.
Remember, your goal here is to get better, not further afflict harm to yourself by buying substandard diabetic supplies from some unknown manufacturer. You can ask for referrals from your doctor or even your family members and friends who are also suffering from diabetes. You can also do your own research at home and read reviews of experts as well as customers that can be found in the internet.
The fact is, certain companies, brands and stores are actually known for particular diabetic supplies. It is like their “specialty” so to speak. So it is best to be aware of these companies.

Of course, it is always imperative that you ask your doctors first about the diabetic supplies that you should buy. This way, you will not waste money on buying something that you will not need after all. As you may know, diabetic supplies can really be costly.

In relation to this, it is best to go for those which have discounted prices. This way, you can save money for your other expenses. But then again, you should never sacrifice quality for the price. Just make sure that you still go for the credible and well established brands. The important part here, is to replenish your medical diabetic supplies on a regular basis. You can always reorder to make sure you have ample supply at home.

About the Author:
Buying medical diabetic supplies can be a complicated decision if someone does not understand the basics of disease. Nowadays, medical diabetic supplies are widely available both offline and online.

CreakyJoints — http://creakyjoints.org — was proud to help sponsor a video series examining ways to improve one’s life despite a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

RA is unlike the more commonly known osteoarthritis, a deterioration of joints due to wear-and-tear. RA is an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks itself, primarily in joints, and can strike at any age. The pain is excruciating, and the bodily deformations caused can be debilitating.

Did you know what you eat can help reduce inflammation? In this segment, Deborah Norville interviews culinary expert and registered dietician Ellie Krieger.

FoodSpook on Pills in America

March 4, 2012 · Posted in FoodSpook Comments · Comment

We are in a lethal nutritional war with giant food corporations that have been teaching we as adults and our children to love and desire packaged and processed foods. These foods are CONSTRUCTED with an unknown number of chemicals and borrowed DNA’s and are cloaked in secrecy. These corprations are now flooding the “supermarkets” with genetically modified foods that by law do not have to be labeled as “genetically modified”.

For my readers under age of 50, you were born in the transition time. You were little kids when supermarkets were born. You were not born when the hamburger joints spread from America’s highways to the inner cities. Our perception of food and the purpose of food have been modified and we have been sleeping. Modified by whom? Major food corporations have convinced us that KFC, Ronald MacDonald, Tony the Tiger, Lucky the Leprechun are all looking out for our nutritional welfare. Well it’s all a big lie!

When I was a child (I am now in my 60′s) there was no epidemic of autism. Thers was no epidemic of ADHD. There was no epidemic of teen anorexia, depression and suicide. High school boys did not bring their father’s rifles to school to shoot as many people they could find. In the inner-city public schools I attended, if there was a beef or a perceived comment of disrespect among us boys we had a fist fight after school. Win or lose, we did not have the intent to KILL a person. Of course there were children that were born with developmental issues in our schools. The number of these children at that time are dwarfed by the number of children today that are diagnosed as lacking in social skills along with some profound physiological deficiencies.

We’ve often heard the old adage “well, times have changed”.  I believe that time is just what it is, time. However, food has changed and is now affecting wholesale changes in our bodies and minds and society as a whole. For example, it is documented that our current pandemic of obesity began approximately 30 years ago. Those of you under the age of 40 were little kids at the time. As adults many of you might think the overall health problems this country is experiencing is normal. Our health situation is not normal, it has been changed by years of false, misleading and confusing advertising from our major food corporations. At this time there is no calvary coming to our rescue. We are on our own.

Times have changed our perceptions about personal health. We have been trained by corporations with their massive media budgets to go to our pharmacy or doctor and state what our problem is and ask for the drug remedy by name as we were told on TV.

This whole blog is about awareness. The majority of health issues happening today are occuring with our implied consent. We have been trained that pills will solve our problems. We are in the 21st CENTURY and our overall health in this country is barely better than 100 years ago. Why? Follow the money.

I am not a medical professional nor nutritionist. I am a plain old blogger with my opinions. My main opinion is we as a nation have to take it upon ourselves to re-discover the abundance of health benefits from nutrition. It is not taught in elementary schools. It is not taught in middle and high schools. Our nutrition is taught on TV to our detriment. We have to teach ourselves.

Follow the money. If you were a food corporation and could cut corners and produce food in abundance and cheaply by adding chemicals and exotic DNA and convince the public to buy it, why not? There are thousands of medicines in our world that are derived from plants. We call them pills. Our planet was created with the plants and food sources necessary to provide us with excellent health and longevity. You only have to open your eyes.

What Effect Does Diabetes Have On Your Teeth?

Only 2/3 of the people in the United States with diabetes have been diagnosed. So approximately 8 million people don’t know they are diabetics.

People with diabetes get mouth infections and gum disease (periodontal disease) more frequently than people without diabetes. In addition, the mouth infections are often much more serious when a person has diabetes. This is even more of a problem when a person with diabetes has uncontrolled blood sugar levels.

Why Is Diabetes Such A Problem?

It’s because diabetes decreases the infection fighting ability of the body. With a decreased ability to fight infections, the gums have a higher risk of gingivitis. Gingivitis is also known as gum disease. If the gum disease is not treated, it leads to tooth loss and entire body infections.

Ways People Who Are Diabetics Can Protect Their Teeth:

* See your dentist on a regular basis and alert him/her of any changes in health status and medications.
* Inform your dentist of any sores, swellings, areas of redness and any painful areas in your mouth.
* Eat a normal meal prior to the dental appointment, take all diabetic medications on schedule, bring your blood sugar monitoring device and inform the dentist if symptoms associated with low blood sugar are felt

FDA 101: Health Fraud Awareness

February 29, 2012 · Posted in Medical Mayhem · Comment

U.S. Food & Drug Administration

A fraudulent medical device with rubber pads and electrical wires, marketed as a muscular workout system, strapped around a man's waist.

Health fraud is the deceptive sale or advertising of products that claim to be effective against medical conditions or otherwise beneficial to health, but which have not been proven safe and effective for those purposes.

In addition to wasting billions of consumers’ dollars each year, health scams can lead patients to delay proper treatment and cause serious—and even fatal—injuries.

Since the 1990s, peddlers of fraudulent “health” products have used the Internet as a primary tool to hawk their wares. This has kept the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other agencies busier than ever in protecting the public from health fraud.

Since June 2008, FDA has warned consumers not to use bogus cancer-treatment products marketed online by 28 U.S. companies. These products include tablets, teas, tonics, salves, and creams sold under more than 180 different brand names.

And since December 2008, FDA has warned about more than 70 weight loss products containing unapproved pharmaceutical ingredients and chemicals not listed on the labels. Some of these ingredients present serious health risks when taken in dosages recommended on the product label.

Common Types of Health Fraud

Cancer fraud: Among the many long-running cancer scams is the Hoxsey Cancer Treatment, an herbal regimen that has no proven benefit. Another scam involves products called black salves. These are offered with the false promise of drawing cancer out from the skin, but they are potentially corrosive to tissues.

Cancer requires individualized treatment by a specialized physician. No single device, remedy, or treatment can treat all types of cancer.

Patients looking to try an experimental cancer treatment should enroll in a legitimate clinical study. For more information, visit the National Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Web site.

HIV/AIDS fraud: There are legitimate treatments that can help people with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). While early treatment of HIV can delay progression to AIDS, there is currently no cure for the disease.

Relying on unproven products and treatments can be dangerous and cause delays in seeking legitimate medical treatments that have been proven in clinical trials to improve quality of life.

Safe, reliable testing to determine whether you have HIV can be done by a medical professional.

To date, there is one FDA-approved testing system that allows individuals to test themselves at home. It is an HIV collection system that tests only for HIV-1, which is the cause of the majority of the world’s HIV infections.

The test, sold either as The Home Access HIV-1 Test System or The Home Access Express HIV-1 Test System, allows blood samples to be sent to a laboratory for testing with an FDA approved HIV-1 test.

Arthritis fraud: The U.S. Federal Trade Commission says consumers spend about $2 billion annually on unproven arthritis remedies that are not backed by adequate science.

For current, accurate information on arthritis treatments and alternative therapies, visit the Arthritis Foundation Web site.

Fraudulent “diagnostic” tests: Doctors often use in vitro diagnostic (IVD) tests—in tandem with a physical examination and a medical history—to get a picture of a patient’s overall health.

These tests involve blood, urine, or other specimen samples taken from the body. They help diagnose or measure many conditions, including pregnancy, hepatitis, fertility, HIV, cholesterol, and blood sugar.

It’s rare that the use of only one of these tests can provide a meaningful diagnosis. You can buy IVD tests in stores, through the mail, or online. Many of these tests are regulated by FDA and sold legally. However, many others are marketed illegally and do not meet FDA’s regulatory requirements. These tests may not work or may be harmful.

To find out whether FDA has cleared or approved an IVD test for a particular purpose, call FDA at (888) 463-6332, or your local FDA district office.

Bogus dietary supplements: The array of dietary supplements—including vitamins and minerals, amino acids, enzymes, herbs, animal extracts and others—has grown tremendously.

Although the benefits of some of these have been documented, the advantages of others are unproven. For example, claims that a supplement allows you to eat all you want and lose weight effortlessly are false.

Claims to treat diseases cause products to be considered drugs. Firms wanting to make such claims legally must follow FDA’s premarket New Drug Approval process to show that the products are safe and effective.

Weight loss fraud: Since 2003, FDA has worked with national and international partners to take hundreds of compliance actions against companies pushing bogus and misleading weight loss schemes.

FDA has recently enhanced efforts to stop sales and importation of—and to warn consumers about—weight loss products that contain dangerous prescription drug ingredients that are not listed on the label.

Sexual enhancement product fraud: FDA has warned consumers about numerous illegal drugs promoted and sold online for treating erectile dysfunction and for enhancing sexual performance.

Although they are marketed as “dietary supplements,” these products are really illegal drugs that contain potentially harmful ingredients that are not listed on the label.

Diabetes fraud: FDA has taken numerous compliance actions against sales of fraudulent diabetes “treatments” promoted with bogus claims such as

  • “drop your blood sugar 50 points in 30 days”
  • “eliminate insulin resistance”
  • “prevent the development of type 2 diabetes”
  • “reduce or eliminate the need for diabetes drugs or insulin”

Influenza (flu) scams: Federal agencies have come across contaminated, counterfeit, and sub-potent influenza products.

FDA, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, has intercepted products claimed to be generic versions of the influenza drug Tamiflu, but which actually contained vitamin C and other substances not shown to be effective in treating or preventing influenza.

Don’t Be a Victim

It’s ultimately up to the buyer to beware of potential health fraud. Know of the potential for health fraud and learn about the common techniques and gimmicks that fraudulent marketers use to gain your attention and trust.

For instance, testimonials from people who say they have used the product may sound convincing, but these can easily be made up. These “testimonials” are not a substitute for scientific proof.

Also, never diagnose or treat yourself with questionable products. Always check with your health care professional before using new medical products.

Be wary of these red flags:

  • claims that a product is a quick, effective cure-all or a diagnostic tool for a wide variety of ailments
  • suggestions that a product can treat or cure diseases
  • promotions using words such as “scientific breakthrough,” “miraculous cure,” “secret ingredient,” and “ancient remedy”
  • text with impressive-sounding terms such as: “hunger stimulation point” and “thermogenesis” for a weight loss product
  • undocumented case histories by consumers or doctors claiming amazing results
  • limited availability and advance payment requirements
  • promises of no-risk, money-back guarantees
  • promises of an “easy” fix
  • claims that the product is “natural” or “non-toxic” (which doesn’t necessarily mean safe)

Don’t be fooled by professional-looking Web sites. Avoid Web sites that fail to list the company’s name, physical address, phone number, or other contact information. For more tips for online buying, visit Buying Medicines and Medical Products Online.

Report Problems

If you find a person or company that you think is illegally selling human drugs, animal drugs, medical devices, biological products, foods, dietary supplements, or cosmetics, report it to FDA.

To report problems with FDA-regulated products, call your local FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator.

To report unlawful sales of medical products on the Internet, visit Reporting Unlawful Sales on Internet.

This article appears on FDA’s Consumer Updates page, which features the latest on all FDA-regulated products.

USDA to Give Monsanto’s New GMO Crops Special ‘Speed Approval’

February 27, 2012 · Posted in Food and Corporations, Food and Politics · Comment

    By Anthony Gucciardi

    Natural Society / News Analysis

    Published: Sunday 26 February 2012

“This is a move to help Monsanto and other biotechnology giants squash competition and make profits.”

If you thought Monsanto’s lack of testing on their current GMO crops was bad before, prepare to now be blown away by the latest statement by the USDA. Despite links to organ damage and mutated insects, the USDA says that it is changing the rules so that genetically modified seed companies like Monsanto will get ‘speedier regulatory reviews’. With the faster reviews, there will be even less time spent on evaluating the potential dangers. Why? Because Monsanto is losing sales with longer approval terms.

The changes are expected to take full effect in March when they’re published in the Federal Register. The USDA’s goal is to cut the approval time for GMO crops in half in order to speedily implement them into the global food supply. The current USDA process takes longer than they would like due to ‘public interest, legal challenges, and the challenges associated with the advent of national organic food standardssays USDA deputy administrator Michael Gregoire.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, problems like public interest (activist groups attempting to bring the dangers of GMO crops to light), legal challenges (farmers suing Monsanto over genetic contamination), and national food standards are all getting in the way of their prime goal — to help Monsanto unleash their latest untested GMO creation. In fact, the concern is that Monsanto may be losing cash flow as nations like Brazil speed genetically modified seeds through laughable approval processes.

Steve Censky, chief executive officer of the American Soybean Association, states it quite plainly. This is a move to help Monsanto and other biotechnology giants squash competition and make profits. After all, who cares about public health?

It is a concern from a competition standpoint,” Censky said in a telephone interview.

The same statements are re-iterated by analyst Jeff Windau in an interview with Bloomberg:

“If you can reduce the approval time, you get sales that much faster,” said Windau

If you can reduce the approval time, as in the time it takes to determine if these food products are safe, then you can get sales much faster. Is the USDA working for the United States consumer, or is it working for Monsanto?

This video provides the facts about psychotropic drugs and the huge profits they create for the pharmaceutical industry. These drugs are not safe and have not been on the market long enough to provide sufficient long term studies regarding their effects. These drugs do cause addiction, however most “doctors” would call this dependence because you do not have to take an increasing dose over time. They are completely fine with you being addicted to the same amount of any given drug on a daily basis.

Over half of the people that commit suicide in the United States are prescribed to psychotropic drugs. (Ex: Paxil (Paroxetine), Zoloft (Sertraline), Prozac, Wellbutrin (Bupropion), Effexor, Seroquil, Ultram (Tramadol), etc.)

Consuming Kids throws desperately needed light on the practices of a relentless multi-billion dollar marketing machine that now sells kids and their parents everything from junk food and violent video games to bogus educational products and the family car.

Drawing on the insights of health care professionals, children’s advocates, and industry insiders, the film focuses on the explosive growth of child marketing in the wake of deregulation, showing how youth marketers have used the latest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to transform American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world.

Consuming Kids pushes back against the wholesale commercialization of childhood, raising urgent questions about the ethics of children’s marketing and its impact on the health and well-being of kids.

Want to avoid metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes? It is possible to prevent both of these conditions if you take control of your eating habits and exercise. No expensive prescription drugs or complicated exercises are required. It could be as simple as drinking four cups of green tea a day and walking for 30 minutes, four or five times a week.

Metabolic syndrome is probably not on your radar screen, yet one in five people are affected in the U.S. Risk factors include extra weight around the waist, insulin resistance, aging, genes, hormone changes, and lack of exercise, which are all harbingers to both cardiovascular disease and (the focus of this article) type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is characterized by insufficient secretion or improper functioning of insulin.

Obesity is a primary risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes. It is closely associated with little or no exercise and poor diet choices, and creates conditions in your body such as:

    • High blood sugar levels
    • Reduced insulin levels and activity
    • High blood pressure
    • Oxidative stress
    • Increase in free radicals that damage cells and DNA (aging process)
    • High LDL (bad) cholesterol
    • And a host of other damages to the heart, kidneys, liver, and pancreas

How can or does green tea lower blood sugar? Green tea is produced by wilting, steaming, and drying the leaves without fermentation. This process retains the potent antioxidant catechin compounds, unlike the process used for black or oolong tea. It appears these catechins are responsible for green tea’s blood sugar-lowering properties.

I am listing the answer to, does green tea lower blood sugar and increase insulin activity, along with many other health benefits it provides:

    • Yes, it lowers blood sugar levels
    • Increases insulin activity
    • Promotes glucose metabolism in healthy individuals
    • Suppresses glucose transfer from the intestine to the blood stream
    • Reduces the enzyme amylase that helps convert starch to sugar
    • Does not lower the blood sugar levels in a healthy person
    • Polysaccharides are also present in the leaves and have the same ability to regulate blood sugar as insulin does
    • Could forestall or alleviate the risk of metabolic syndrome, a precursor to type 2 diabetes
    • Importantly could control or prevent type 2 diabetes

Does green tea lower blood sugar and increase insulin activity is answered with a resounding yes. There are still a few important facts you should know before you consider drinking this healthful beverage.

    • The antioxidant activity of green tea is almost six times that of black
    • Caffeine does not help in lowering blood sugar and can have an adverse effect on blood sugar
    • Drinking unsweetened decaffeinated green tea might be more beneficial
    • Green tea extract pills and nutritional supplements are primarily made from extracts of the decaffeinated leaves.
    • Milk in tea does not reduce the increase of insulin activity in humans, but don’t add sugar
    • Instant, herbal, and other commercially prepared teas do not show increased insulin activity in studies conducted by the USDA

Does green tea lower blood sugar and increase insulin activity? I have included a lot of supporting information that I hope is helpful and the answer is still yes.

Do yourself a favor and consider the many health benefits to be obtained with regular exercise, a healthful diet, and consumption of the potent green leaf antioxidant compounds.

Think of how much enjoyment there is to be gained by being healthy.

If you try the beverage and don’t care for the taste, try taking a nutritional supplement containing the antioxidant compounds plus many other health benefitting vitamins and nutrients.

    Tests For Diagnosing Gestational Diabetes

A single set of screening guidelines has still not been established by the medical experts. There are various questions which say whether gestational diabetes diagnosis is required or not. If a person is younger than 25 years, he will have no risk factors. Other say that screening is the best way of knowing about gestational diabetes.

    When to screen

The risk factors are very likely to be evaluated for gestational diabetes very early in pregnancy.

If a person is at a high risk of gestational diabetes, screening should be done. If the BMI was 30 before pregnancy, the doctor may test for diabetes at the first prenatal visit.
If a person is at an average risk of diabetes, there will be a screening test for gestational diabetes during the second trimester. This is usually between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.

    Routine screening for gestational diabetes

    Initial glucose challenge test

The glucose challenge test can be started by drinking a syrupy glucose solution. After an hour, a blood sugar test can be taken for measuring the blood sugar level. A blood sugar level that is between 130 to 140 milligrams is usually considered to be very normal on the glucose challenge test. There may be a variation at specific labs or clinics. This is the best test for gestational diabetes diagnosis. The doctor will diagnose after giving a follow up test.

    Follow up glucose tolerance testing

For the follow up test, a person will be asked for fasting overnight. Then she can have his blood sugar level measured. Another sweet solution can be drunk. This will usually contain a very higher concentration of glucose. The doctor will check the blood sugar level every hour. If the blood sugar readings are higher than the normal, a woman will be diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

If a woman is diagnosed with diagnosis gestational diabetes

If a woman is having gestational diabetes, frequent checkups will be recommended by the doctor. This is true especially during the first three months of pregnancy. The blood sugar will be carefully monitored by the doctor. The doctor may also ask for monitoring own blood sugar.

Non stress test is also a very good test for gestational diabetes diagnosis. Sensors will be placed on the stomach for monitoring and measuring the heart rate of the baby. If the baby’s heart is not beating faster, enough oxygen may not be obtained by the baby.

GMO Foods and Intellectual Property: The Ultimate Food Fight

Imagine. In the not-so-distant future,  any person, family, farmer or any other type of food grower in the world will have to get permission to plant each seed. We will have to pay a mandatory royalty to one of a handful of multi-national corporations that are in the process  of filing patents on all the seeds on our planet. I repeat, a MANDATORY royalty. There will be no safety net. This is not science fiction. The process began several years ago, quietly.

As the world begins to digest the implications of intellectual property for online censorship, another IP issue threatens an even more fundamental part of our daily lives: our food supply. Backed by legal precedent and armed with seemingly inexhaustible lobbying funds, a handful of multinationals are attempting to use patents on life itself to monopolize the biosphere.

Tips About How To Deal With Diabetes In 6 Trouble-free Actions

If you have been diagnosed recently with diabetes, you are probably feeling like you were hit with a death sentence. You have heard all about the disease through older relatives, the television and radio, as well as, the internet. The disease of diabetes should not be taken lightly and dismissed.

So, what is diabetes? It is a disorder in which your body is unable to handle high sugar levels, which causes severe damage to your organs and overall body. The disease can affect many functions of the body, when left out of control.

Many deaths, every year, are caused by the direct impact from mismanaged diabetic care. The good news is that with today’s’ advancing medical technologies and medicines, always on the cutting edge, you can be assured that you can live a healthy and eventful life, with the proper medical care and management by a qualified physician.

Steps To Help With This Medical Condition:

    1. I would have to say that the word that most people dislike most is “diet”. When one has diabetes it is not necessary that you “diet”, as much as to watch your diet. Certain foods can have an adverse reaction to those that are trying to manage their diabetes. Sugar, for instance, is a diabetics nightmare. Sugary foods should be avoided, especially processed sugary foods.

    2. Whole foods and grains provide a body with all the nutritional needs it thrives on. Vitamins, Minerals, Proteins with low carbohydrates are a perfect choice.

    3. Water is the most important liquid you can put in to your body. It is a vital need for those with high blood sugar. It is recommended, by physicians, that you drink at least eight glasses of water a day. It is not to be confused with other beverages, such as juices, soda’s or coffee. Water is water, clean and pure. As an added bonus, those with diabetes can actually lower their blood glucose levels by drinking the recommended amounts of water.

    4. Herbal teas can have great health qualities. To drink herbal teas, especially green teas, acts as a form of blockage in the body against large amounts of sugar digested. The tea can regulate your blood sugar, which is nice to know, considering it is natural.

    5. Foods rich in fiber, such as whole grains and green leafy vegetables are great benefits to the diabetics diet. They can be prepared in a variety of ways that make them appealing, even to the pickiest palates.

    6. Exercise is a must for the diabetic, as it gets the system processing, working as a well maintain engine. There have been many studies proving that exercise can actually lower blood glucose levels enough as to wean some patients off their medications.

As diabetes can be a life threatening disease, anyone can see that with a few changes in diet and lifestyle, there are many options to empower the patient. All it takes is a bit of creativity in menus and the will to get out there and be active!
